Jan manages to escape from captivity and meets Pascualina in London. Jan, however, seems to be a different person. He is obsessed with the idea of returning to Russian and demonstrating he is able to clean his father's name without being coerced. Pascualina fails to make him change his mind and finally travels with him and her father to Moscow in an attempt to make him reason. As soon as they walk across the Red Square, Andriev shows up bringing with him all the memories lived with Pascualina. Pascualina knows she was part of his mission, but she trusts in the truth of his feelings. Her heart is confused but decides to stay by Jan and asks Andriev not to contact her ever again. Andriev agrees and some days later he travels to Siberia to take control of a political prisoner prison. One night, there is a fire and the prisioners escape and Andriev finds himself in charge of a baby and a boy to whom he promises not to abandon and find their families. The little boy finds Pascualina's email on Andriev's computer and starts communication with her without Andriev knowing.
Jan needs time to make his mind and stays in Moscow. Pascualina returns to her new home in Amsterdam where after a short time she finds out Jan has got married to a Russian girl to get the nationality. Despite her feelings of sadness, the unexpected situation Jan is involved into forces Pascualina to end their relationship. Pascualina has done her very best but she cannot force Jan's decisions. Pascualina now is free and her heart immediately turns to the memories of Andriev.
After the happy encounter Pascualina and Jan had, they live a moment of peace and serenity in Prague. Nobody could tell that their lives would drastically change very soon.
During a visit to Moscow, Jan is retained against his will. In few hours the boy who had always considered himself as an orphan finds out the truth about his father and family. A truth his grandfather had so much fought to hide. His father who was Russian, not Czech had not died in an accident but died in an attack in retaliation to his defection. Now the secret police tries Jan to replace his father who had been a wellknown circus artist and restore the public show. Without further explanations, he is forced to end his relationship with Pascualina by phone. Pascualina is disconcerted and unable to explain this dramatic change in Jan's attitude, decides to shelter herself in the love of her friends and to continue with the tour she has started with the Prague Theater touring Berlin, Paris and London. Pascualina does not know but the secret police has sent a young and attractive agent called Andriev to make sure Pascualina will not approach Jan. However the plan fails when Andriev starts to fall in love with Pascualina after talking to her and spending weeks with her.
After Pascualina finds out Jan and her friend in disguise are the same person, they start a sentimental relationship that goes through many difficulties in order to achieve consolidation. It is hard for Pascualina to convince herself that Jan and the person who offered her such sweet friendship are the same person and she acts a bit awkward in front of him. On the other hand, Jan feels insecure as he is not certain Pascualina has managed to forget Gustav. The situation becomes more tense when in Cracow during a theatrical tour Pascualina receives a letter from Gustav. Jan feels betrayed and decides to leave the town without saying goodbye to join his regular job at the circus.
Pascualina has not had the time to let him know she will be moving to Prague. She had the hope the relationship would prosper if both were living in the same city. Pascualina was unaware Jan's artistic job forced him to be far from Prague most of the time.
The family stops in Budapest before settling in Prague for good. Pascualina meets some friends in the city and together decide to attend the circus show on tour in the city. Pascualina does not know, but Jan has suffered an accident while he was in the trapeze and he might not walk again. Everybody conceals the news from Pascualina. She has been told Jan is out of town therefore she decides to wait near the circus until he returns. With the help of some friends in common, Jan struggles to recover his health and win her love back by using – according to his style– a strategy to approach Pascualina without being recognized.
Gustav moves to Barcelona to be closer to Pascualina. However what was at first a heroic action of love has turn into a continuous reproach towards Pascualina. It is more and more difficult to deal with Gustav's distant and taciturn attitude.
It is vacation time and Gustav decides to go to Naples with a different group of friends. Pascualina loves Gustav very much but she is not happy with him as their interests are every time more and more diverse. When Pascualina finds out about his trip she feels hurt and decides to end their relationship. Her father, who is concerned about her, takes advantage of the school holidays and invites Pascualina to spend some days with him in Bruges, her hometown. At her arrival to Bruges, Pascualina meets Jan. He is from Prague and is spending the season in Bruges as his grandfather has asked him to cheer up the children suffering from cancer at the hospital. Jan is a street artist who works with puppets, plays the balalaika and sings. Pascualina is ignorant about Jan's mission and considers him arrogant. At the same time Pascualina rejects Jan, she finds comfort and understanding from the friendship a peculiar character that walks Bruges under a disguise offers her. Little by little, Pascualina overcomes her sadness for Gustav and makes some room to hope in her heart.
Few months after the beginning of the romance between Pascualina and Gustav, don Pascual makes the announcement to the family that they will have to leave Paris and move to Barcelona.
Pascualina is afraid of telling Gustav the news as she does not want to lose him. Gustav has lately been distant and quiet since he had to end a two years relationship with Filomene in order to be with Pascualina. Filomene is a girl who suffers from intermittent anorexic crisis and now she is manipulating Gustav with her illness and has developed feelings of guilt in Gustav.
Pascualina is looking for the right moment to approach Gustav and talk to him. However he is constantly avoiding her. Filomene and the family problems invade his mind.
Pascualina in an attempt to beat the sadness caused by Gustav's decision to move away decides to participate in some psychology lessons where she learns about her fears and what anguish is which allows her to have a better understanding of herself.
It has been some time since Pascualina and Gustav met on the train from Istanbul to Paris. Pascualina feels she is unable to forget her former boyfriend Lucas who was her first love and finds it difficult to recognize everything is over. Pascualina and Gustav meet again in Paris and a deep friendship develops between them. Gustav helps her to understand and overcome the sadness she feels about Lucas and at the same time he helps her to acknowledge her own value. The sadness Pascualina feels starts to heal and Gustav feels more and more under the spell of her sweetness and sensitivity. Pascualina understands she is not a shallow girl and that she has a big heart able to show deep love. Gustav encourages her to show her feelings through painting and to use it as a means to better understand herself.
The feeling that started as a friendship now turns into an unforgettable and sweet sentimental relationship.
